A Few Tips on Travelling within Praia

Praia is Cabo Verde's capital and busiest city, making it a must-see place when you visit Cabo Verde. The major means of commuting within the city include buses, taxis, walking or by renting cars. How you decide to travel within Praia depends largely on where you’re going and how much you’re willing to spend

Without much ado, here are a few tips on traveling within Praia:

Local Buses: Within the city, there are many bus stops, and vehicles are everywhere waiting for passengers. There are two main bus companies that serve the city’s transport needs, Moura Company, and Sol Atlantico.

Within Praia, there are about eight routes, and each route has its own number. Some of the main lines are from Safende to Achada Santo Antonio, Vila Nova to Achada Santo Antonio, Calbeceira to Palmarejo.

During your first few days, ensure you travel with someone for the first few trips you’ll make by bus, and then take note of the numbers for each route before venture out on your own.

Taxis:

Prices for taxi range between 50-1800 Escudos depending on the distance and time of the day that you are commuting, If you can afford to spare a few bucks, tipping is highly appreciated.

When it comes to taxis you should be careful with illegal taxis that sometimes roam around and might rip you off, a general rule of thumb is to make use of taxis that have a taximeter, so that they don’t overcharge you.

Walking: Walking is the simplest and healthiest way to travel, you should keep in mind that there are no official roadmaps. It goes without saying that most streets in the city center have names and numbers plus, most people are friendly and will give you directions when asked.

However, we do not recommend walking between the different districts because it has quite a lot of hills and it may get tiring if you feel like you’re up for a quick cardio- go for it.

Cycling within Praia is also ideal; it gives you the opportunity to experience the city more intimately.

Car rentals: Rental cars can be found mainly at the airport, but with the boom of tourism some downtown locations have opened as well. It might be the most comfortable means, but it’s definitely less adventurous.

We can’t wait to explore Praia with you.
