A Few Tips on Traveling within Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde’s geography is special and unlike most others, the process of traveling within our country is an adventure on its own. Due to Cabo Verde being made up of islands, it’s virtually impossible for anyone to drive from one island to another- at least for now.

In the spirit of ensuring that we equip you with all the necessary pieces of information you’ll need to make your trip to and within Cabo Verde a success- at least logistically, we’ve compiled a few tips to help you navigate your way through our country.

Island Hopping

When moving from one island to another, there’s one question that has to be answered, would you rather fly or make use of a ferry/boat? As with most other countries, the fastest and most efficient way to travel within our country is by air, it goes without saying that they are more expensive than ferries but are completely worth it.

Flying between islands is pretty straight forward, for the most part, keep in mind that not all the islands are accessible by planes due to weather conditions, and not all airports have direct routes between them. To get to Santo Antão from Brava, for example, you would have to take a ferry to Santiago before flying out to São Vicente, where you’ll continue your trip on a ferry to Santo Antão. Flights can be canceled or delayed due to weather conditions of volcanic activity on Fogo.

If flying isn’t for you, your next best option would be to make use of boats when traveling between islands that are relatively close to each other- an hour’s journey or less. Boats and ferries in our country try their best to be on time and boat operators make the effort to maintain their vessels. Traveling by sea is highly discouraged if you’re prone to seasickness.

Moving around

Minibusses or Aluguers as they’re popularly referred to in Cabo Verde provides valuable connections between towns on most islands. They pick up people at unmarked points around town, set off when they're more or less full, and drop passengers off anywhere on the way, on request. There are also taxis that can take you around town.
